Frequently asked questionsWhy do I have to pay for orientation?Orientation is a self-sustaining program. The funds earned are used to purchase all supplies and materials, provide for meals, guest speakers, and other costs associated with the program, and payment of the staff (Orientation Team) who run the program. Do I have to stay all day?Although we think that both students and parents benefit greatly from experiencing the entire program, we will not force anyone to stay. However, students who leave early will not be able to register for courses on that day. Once the Orientation program is complete, students are directed to advisement and registration. The length of time that each family stays is contigent upon the student's registration experience and varies for each individual. Can parents / family members go with their student to register for courses? No. Orientation is a student's first opportunity to experience academic independence. It is important that students begin their collegiate experience with a knowledgeable and independent approach. In addition, we have limited space for our advising and registration processes and must keep the rooms clear for the students attending orientation. All family members and guests will be in a separate program for family members. I am a transfer student. Do I have to attend orientation?Transfer students should complete the on-line orientation. The online orientation is accessable by using the link to the left. Please remember that although you complete the online orientation you must still see your academic advisor before you can register for classes. *Transfer students accepted into the Basic Studies Department should contact Karen Kinard at 706-565-4016 to sign up for your transfer orientation. If I attended an orientation and didn't enroll, do I have to come again? If we have a record that you have attended an orientation session, then you aren't required to attend another. Contact Paula Simko at 706-568-2330 to verify that you attended an earlier orientation session. If I have/want to change my major from what I listed on my admissions application, will that affect my advisement at orientation? To better serve you, the information on your orientation reservation should be consistent with that in the admissions database. Therefore, if you would like to change your major after you apply to the university, please contact the admissions office and request a change of major on your records. The number is 706-507-8800. I can't come to orientation because I have a conflict. What should I do?We have multiple dates to select from. It is important, however, that you select the program that describes you best. (See the different types of orientation programs for more details.) Because orientation is a mandatory program, you must wait until schedule change to register for courses if you are unable to attend. I paid to attend orientation but was unable to come. What should I do?We have scheduled multiple programs to make scheduling easier for you. If you didn't attend, please refer to the various programs and select a different date. Contact Paula Simko (706-568-2330) for clarification should you have questions. As a parent, must I stay all day and attend each session? No, you may leave or take a break at any time; however, if you plan to attend any of the sessions, you must pay the full guest fee. No. Our Orientation program is conprehensive and includes all necessary information . The program is primarily directed in a large group setting, therefore students who arrive late and leave early risk missing valuable information and are also disruptive to the program. What should I bring? Before attending orientation, please make sure the university has received all transcripts (high school and college), immunization forms and residency paperwork, if needed. Students attending the Residence Life Orientation programs for main campus and River Park Orientation should bring a pillow, bed linens for a twin bed, bath linens, alarm clock and personal items. A luau is planned for the main campus overnight orientation. Please bring your bathing suit and towel if you plan to swim. You never know...you just may get thrown in! For students, orientation is the program that will introduce them to our campus. You will learn about campus services, student organizations and how to register for courses. Non-traditional and transfer students will also attend sessions on their common questions and concerns. After you’ve attended orientation, student leaders will direct you to advisers, who will discuss curriculum requirements with you and ultimately guide you through an online registration. Family members will be separated from their students throughout the day. They will have the opportunity to meet with various campus administrators and learn about the services available to students. They will also become acquainted with the academic processes and procedures. Family members attending the overnight programs should note that on the first night of your stay, you will be visiting the Coca-Cola Space Science Center and take a tour of downtown Columbus. Please be prepared to tour until approximately 9:00 p.m. that evening. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes because we have a lot planned! Where do I park?CSU will be breaking ground on a new Student Recreation Center in June 2009. Attendees should attempt to park in the parking garage or in Lot 14. Campus police will be assisting new students should problems be encountered. We apologize for the growing pains.
